e thème de la sculpture de Henry est la tension entre la fabrication et la mise en scène de figures qui semblent appartenir au monde réel, et la mesure dans laquelle elles font écho à nos expériences et à nos sympathies.
Les sculptures de Sean Henry sont peintes individuellement par l’artiste à l’aide d’huile et d’autres peintures sur la surface en bronze ou en céramique.

Henry est devenu adepte de la manipulation d’échelle et évite presque toujours la représentation grandeur nature. Il explore les capacités narratives de la sculpture par le biais de diverses stratégies : utilisation de plus d’une figure, utilisation économique de l’iconographie contemporaine et capacité magistrale à suggérer une présence psychologique. Ses sculptures figuratives sont autonomes, souvent pensifs, préoccupés par leur imagination intérieure. Elles dégagent ce que les Grecs anciens appelaient la sophrosyne, ou maîtrise de soi. Ce sentiment d’ancrage est essentiel pour les figures de Henry et crée leur forte présence physique, leur sentiment d’être et de durer. Il a la capacité de réduire son matériel objectif et de conceptualiser l’essentiel du moi intérieur, tout en combinant cela avec ses compétences consommées en tant que sculpteur et peintre et sa compréhension de la forme et de la masse. Sa première exposition individuelle a eu lieu à Londres en 1988 et il a depuis exposé son travail dans de nombreuses expositions individuelles et collectives au Royaume-Uni, aux États-Unis, en Suède, en Allemagne, en Hollande, en Italie, en Australie, en Grèce et en Suisse, dans certaines des galeries les plus prestigieuses.

Ses projets passés vont de Couple, la première sculpture permanente en mer du Royaume-Uni, une sculpture en bronze et en acier de 13 m de haut et de 18 m de large installée au large de la côte nord-est de l’Angleterre dans le Northumberland, à une installation intérieure de neuf sculptures dans les nouveaux locaux de la Standard Chartered Bank dans la City de Londres. Parmi les autres œuvres notables, citons l’homme aux trois figures, Man With Potential Selves, situé dans le centre de Newcastle Upon Tyne et au Cumberland Hotel, Marble Arch, à Londres, Melancholia, une sculpture intime en relief de 10 cm de profondeur, et John (Standing), une représentation de 30 cm de haut d’un sans-abri que l’artiste a rencontré à Londres.

En 2008, Scala Publishers a publié la première monographie complète sur l’œuvre de Henry, écrite par l’historien de l’art Tom Flynn, qui a été suivie en 2011 par la publication par Scala de Conflux pour marquer la plus grande exposition de l’artiste à ce jour à la cathédrale de Salisbury en Angleterre, qui a attiré plus de 100 000 visiteurs pendant sa durée, un record pour la cathédrale.
Sean Henry vit et travaille au Royaume-Uni ; il est marié et a trois enfants.

  • 2015Sean Henry was most recently celebrated at the National Portrait Gallery in London where his commissioned portrait of Sir Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web was first presented to the public.
