‘In between sculpture’ • Hanneke Beaumont’s works on paper

From March 30 to May 17, 2025

Opening vernissage on Sunday 30 March, from 3:00 to 6:00 pm.

LKFF Art Projects is proud to present a unique exhibition dedicated to the works on paper by Dutch artist Hanneke Beaumont.

« Largely unknown and somewhat hesitatingly exhibited, the drawings are among the most soulful aspects of her oeuvre.  These are not preparatory works that lead to a model or to a full-scale sculpture, but the drawings occur within the sculptural process or occur as reflections after particular works. »
Prof. J. A. Becherer, « The Quiet Between »

While she is best known for her androgynous human figures in terracotta, bronze and iron, this exhibition offers a rare opportunity to explore a lesser-known but integral aspect of her artistic practice: her drawings.

Beaumont’s approach to drawing is inherently sculptural. She emphasises volume, relief, and matter, echoing the natural pigments and surface treatments that characterise her sculptures. Beaumont explains she enjoys the immediacy of drawing and painting compared to the slow build-up required with work in clay. Her paintings present a light and very gestural, sometimes quite abstract approach.

Part of Beaumont’s drawings serve as preliminary studies for her sculptural figures but most of the time, the sculptures inspire what comes on paper.
To highlight this connection, the exhibition includes plaster models that directly link the two mediums, demonstrating the fluid dialogue between line and mass, gesture and solidity.

By shifting the focus from sculpture to drawing, we discover an artist whose vision extends far beyond the boundaries of a single medium or genre.
