Julia VANCE
eschreven woorden hebben een belangrijke grafische kracht, zowel door de sporen die inkt achterlaat op papier, als door de beelden die woorden bij ons oproepen. De kunstwereld maakt al lang gebruik van woorden; men denke aan Magritte, Marcel Broodthaers of Alechinsky om er maar een paar te noemen. In veel kunstwerken hebben woorden geleidelijk aan de beelden vervangen en zijn ze zelf het voorwerp van voorstelling geworden.
Julia Vance (Hamburg, 1968 – Noorse nationaliteit) associeert door middel van opmerkelijke stenen sculpturen de “betekenaar” en de “betekende”. Beide vullen elkaar aan, raken verwarrend met elkaar verweven en verliezen zichzelf totdat de toeschouwer niet meer kan onderscheiden waar het woord begint of het beeld eindigt. De betekende vindt zijn betekenis in de sculpturale compositie en de letters ordenen zichzelf om betekenis te geven aan de betekenaar.

- 1968Born in Hamburg, Germany.
- 1984 – 1987Vance studies esthetical art at the Fagerborg College in Norway
- 1988 – 1991She attends a graphic production course at the Sogn Craft School (Sogn Yrkesskole) and later the School of Graphic Design (SFGD) in Norway
- 1989Design work at Lloyd Christie Garden architecture in England
- 1989 – 1990Assistant Art Director in a Norwegian advertising company.
- 1991 – 1992Julia moves to England where she specializes in calligraphy at the Roehampton Inst. of Higher Education, Calligraphy Department
- 1992Julia Vance completelly immerses herself in Calligraphy by becoming apprentice of letter designer, calligrapher and lettercarver Tom Perkins (UK) and shortly later, in 1993, lecturing in calligraphy and letter design at the Stately Art and Craft School of Oslo (SHKS) and at the University of Gjovik and Drammen
