ean-Paul BLAIS probeert niet te evoceren of te beschrijven. Alleen de handeling van het maken is belangrijk voor hem en stelt hem in staat het resultaat van zijn meditatie, van zijn mentale reizen, over te brengen op zijn kunst. Een actie die eindeloos opnieuw wordt uitgevonden door nieuwe dialoog met de materie. Zoals Pierre Soulages over zwart zou zeggen, is het ” …zowel een kleur als een niet-kleur. Wanneer er licht op zwart valt, transformeert en transmuteert het. Het opent een geheel eigen mentaal veld”. Blais ziet licht als een materie om mee te werken op zijn licht gebogen zwarte houten reliëfs; strepen in het zwarte oppervlak van zijn sculpturen stellen hem in staat het licht te laten weerkaatsen, waardoor het zwart uit de duisternis en in de helderheid komt en zo een stralende kleur wordt.
