H

et thema van Henry’s beeldhouwwerk is de spanning tussen het maken en ensceneren van figuren die tot de echte wereld lijken te behoren, en de mate waarin ze een echo zijn van onze ervaringen en sympathieën.

Sean Henry’s sculpturen worden individueel door de kunstenaar beschilderd met olieverf en andere verfsoorten op het bronzen of keramische oppervlak.
Henry is bedreven geraakt in de manipulatie van schaal en vermijdt bijna altijd levensgrote representatie. Hij verkent de narratieve mogelijkheden van de beeldhouwkunst door middel van verschillende strategieën; door meer dan één figuur te gebruiken; door het spaarzame gebruik van hedendaagse iconografie; en door een meesterlijk vermogen om psychologische aanwezigheid te suggereren. Zijn figuratieve sculpturen zijn op zichzelf staand, vaak peinzend, in beslag genomen door hun innerlijke verbeelding. Ze stralen uit wat de oude Grieken sofrosyne noemden, of zelfbeheersing. Dit gevoel van geaardheid staat centraal in Henry’s figuren en creëert hun sterke fysieke aanwezigheid, hun gevoel van zijn en blijven. Hij heeft het vermogen om zijn objectieve materiaal te reduceren en het essentiële innerlijke zelf te conceptualiseren, terwijl hij dit combineert met zijn volmaakte vaardigheid als beeldhouwer en schilder en zijn begrip van vorm en massa. Zijn eerste solotentoonstelling was in 1988 in Londen en sindsdien heeft hij zijn werk op grote schaal tentoongesteld in zowel solo- als groepstentoonstellingen in de UK, USA, Zweden, Duitsland, Nederland, Italië, Australië, Griekenland en Zwitserland in enkele van de meest prestigieuze galeries.

Projecten uit het verleden variëren in schaal van Couple – de eerste permanente offshore sculptuur in het Verenigd Koninkrijk – een veelgeprezen grootschalige, 13 meter hoge en 18 meter brede sculptuur van brons en staal, geïnstalleerd voor de noordoostkust van Engeland in Northumberland, tot een binneninstallatie van negen sculpturen in het nieuwe gebouw van de Standard Chartered Bank in de City van Londen. Andere opmerkelijke werken zijn de drie figuren Man With Potential Selves, geplaatst in het centrum van Newcastle Upon Tyne en in het Cumberland Hotel, Marble Arch, Londen, Melancholia een intieme 10 cm diepe reliëfsculptuur en John (Standing) een 31″ hoge afbeelding van een dakloze man die de kunstenaar in Londen ontmoette.

In 2008 publiceerde uitgeverij Scala de eerste uitgebreide monografie over het werk van Henry, geschreven door kunsthistoricus Tom Flynn. In 2011 volgde de publicatie van Scala Conflux ter gelegenheid van de grootste tentoonstelling van de kunstenaar tot nu toe in de kathedraal van Salisbury in Engeland, die meer dan 100.000 bezoekers trok, een record voor de kathedraal.
Sean Henry woont en werkt in het Verenigd Koninkrijk; hij is getrouwd en heeft drie kinderen.
